New Zealanders with CF are struggling right now due to the Coronavirus emergency.

Worry, fear, loneliness, and concern for what the future holds are some of the things we've all felt over the last few weeks. But for people with cystic fibrosis, who are already battling the biggest fight of their lives, this coronavirus pandemic is pushing many of them to crisis point.

If you are able, please make a donation today to ensure people with CF and their families receive practical and emotional support throughout the pandemic and beyond.

If you are not in a position to support us, we completely understand. Please take care of yourself and your family during this difficult time.

We are entering the time of year when our usual support services are in highest demand.

Colder days, freezing nights, increased exacerbations and frequent hospitalisations. When combined with the knock-on effect from the coronavirus pandemic, we have no doubt this will be an incredibly difficult year for the cystic fibrosis community.

And like many other charities, the coronavirus pandemic is also having an unbelievable impact on our fundraising. Loss in income will have an impact on the support people with cystic fibrosis receive, and we desperately want to avoid that.

Your support will mean people with cystic fibrosis and their families can be supported throughout the pandemic and into the future.

People with CF need your help

We’re seeing more and more people reaching out to our CF Fieldworkers for reassurance as they struggle with their mental health and keeping on top of their treatment regime.

We’re also seeing an increase in asks for practical help with heating, warm clothing, and access to essential services and food.

During a recent debrief with our team of CF Fieldworkers, they shared a few of the challenges they've seen.

  • Three families have received the devastating news while in lockdown that their newborn babies have CF. For these new parents it’s an incredibly daunting time, with limited access to usual support systems.

  • Anxiety has surged around the virus and its pattern of targeting people with health conditions. There is also deep concern around the possibility of having to go to hospital due to a CF exacerbation, as hospitals may have patients with coronavirus.

  • Despite priority access to supermarket deliveries, many people with CF are still struggling to get the food they need.

  • Most home support has stopped, and some families have chosen to stop it due to the increased risk of exposure. So this means no support from the community physiotherapist, no home help or respite, and increased social isolation.

  • People have lost jobs, so we’re seeing a lot of financial stress, particularly as it’s getting colder now, and heating is required at nights.

  • Lung transplants continue to take place, but, with strict no-visitor policies, recovery is extremely lonely without family or a support person allowed in.

It’s certainly a challenge – and one we can rise to with your help.

Help make a difference.

At Cystic Fibrosis NZ, we are doing all we can to try and support people with CF and their families through this unprecendented time:

  • We are providing emergency assistance through our welfare support, which is in demand more than ever.

  • We are helping the community to support each other in this time of isolation.

  • We are working with the CF Clinical Advisory Panel to providing the most up-to-date guidance on how people with CF and their families can stay safe.

There has been an enormous increase in the demand for our welfare and mental health support and the number of interventions carried out by our CF Fieldworkers has doubled.

We are also entering the time of year when our usual support services are in highest demand. When combined with the knock-on effect from the Coronavirus, we're anticipating an incredibly difficult year for the cystic fibrosis community.

We want to help every single person who needs us, but we are facing tough choices.

If you are able, please make a donation to our Emergency Appeal today to help us to continue this work.
