The spirit of the She Shed

3 March 2022

The Shed Shed is a collective of women who are artists on the Gisborne beaches. Founder Cheryl Scott, a phenomenal artist herself, gathered a group of friends and they came up with the novel idea of the She Shed tour.

Over the last six years, this talented group of women open their studios to the public in November. They also open the invitation to other artists to showcase and sell their work.

“As artists we range from mosaicists to painters, weavers, glass workers, textile artists, silversmith...the lot!” says organiser Margaret Hansen. “Groups of friends travel between the venues, buying art and gifts, enjoying the food and coffee stalls, and contributing to a charity and a scholarship.”

The proceeds from the tour go toward funding a scholarship for a young woman who is studying art. They also choose a local charity that is close to their hearts. Cystic Fibrosis NZ was chosen as one of their families had been touched by this condition for over 30 years.

Margaret concludes, “the spirit of the She Shed is one of sharing, and we just love being able to do this as well as open our studios and share our art.”
