»Breath4CF Physical Activity
![]()
The Breath4CF Physical Activity grant is an allowance for people with Cystic Fibrosis, to assist them so that cost is not a barrier to physical exercise. Medical advice is unanimous, exercise is a way that people with CF can affect their own quality of life and longevity.
Breath4CF allowances are graduated for age:
Child 0 - 5 years $150 All Others (6 years +) $300 These rates have been reviewed by the CFANZ Board and have been reduced in light of lower than expected returns on fundraising for the past two-three years. These rates take effect on 1 August 2011, and applications recevied before 27 July 2011 will be processed at current allowance rates.
To qualify for this allowance people with Cystic Fibrosis must be registered with the National Office, but need not be symptomatic.
Most sports and activities are covered by the allowance, but in general the activity must: increase breathing rate, increase heart rate and / or increase movement of chest and upper body. Some 'grey' areas exist and any activities that fall into these 'grey' areas are referred to a Cystic Fibrosis Physiotherapist for a final decision as the activity's benefit.
For more details regarding those activities specifically excluded, please refer to the application form, which can be downloaded from our Forms page.
IMPORTANT - please remember to include receipts, invoices or quotes with your application as we cannot process it without them.

»Chris Howlett Endowment
The Chris Howlett endowment fund provides for a once only cash payment to 18 year olds with Cystic Fibrosis.
The endowment fund was made possible by the Chris Howlett Trust which was established in 1991 to fund the medical and quality of life needs of 14 year old Chris Howlett, of Whangarei, New Zealand. Chris and his family moved to London expecting that he would undergo a lifesaving triple organ transplant, but removal of an enlarged spleen brought a dramatic improvement and the transplants were not required. Sadly, Chris died 5 years later, in July 1996, age 19 years.
The CFANZ Board investigated ways of benefiting future young adults with CF, and decided to establish the Chris Howlett Endowment Fund. The fund is managed with the aim of preserving the value of the capital sum, and making cash payments from the interest to people with CF on turning 18 years of age.
In 1998 the fund started by making a payment of $500 to those people with CF who were already 18 or who turned 18 between 1 March 1998 and 28 February 1999. During the last few years, this amount has increased, so that it now stands at $1700 for those turning 18. There will be no strings attached as far as what the money is used for. It is intended to be a "helping hand" for the recipient.
To qualify for the grant, people with Cystic Fibrosis should register with the Association prior to their 18th birthday, so that payments can be made at the appropriate time. As their eligibility will cease on their 19th birthday, they must have their application into the Association before that time.
To qualify for a grant you must:
- Have symptomatic Cystic Fibrosis
- Be a New Zealand resident
- be 18 years of age
- Register with the Association's National Office
Key points about the Endowment Fund are:
- People may register with the Association before turning 18, but may register any time before their 19th birthday, at which date their eligibility will cease.
- The Chris Howlett Endowment Fund money is maintained in a Managed Fund with the aim of maximising the investment return consistent with security of investment. The level of payment made each year will be decided by the Association's Board, taking into account the need to preserve the value of the capital sum, the number of payments projected to be made, and the available funds.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
21 Nov 2011: The age of eligibility for the Chris Howlett Endowment has been changed to 21 years. This change will come into effect on 1 July 2012. Anyone turning 18 years old prior to that date is still eligible under the existing rules, after that time any pre-registrations will be held until the applicants reach 21 years of age.
How to Register:
You can register by completing the Chris Howlett Registration Form and mailing it to our National Office.
Find the form on our Documents & Forms page.
