He DID IT!  Mike Wood cycles from Morrinsville to Christchurch to raise funds for CF!

“That’s all folks”

Those are the last words of Mike Wood’s 13 May blog, 40k short of his Morrinsville to Christchurch bike-ride finish and how he thought it would be the next night. But it wasn’t.

Mike finished the challenge he set himself and well exceeded his fundraising target* ($10,000) to rousing cheers on the spot and later again that night from all the Conference delegates.

Who’d have expected 12 days of glorious weather for his ride, accompanied by wife Deb and daughter Briar. Maybe it was the spine-chilling haka the Morrinsville College performed at his send-off. All the way through, at local communities and schools there was a short stop to say g’day and thanks for donations and cash collections.

Mike’s proudest claim is that he didn’t have to get off his bike on a hill once. That included all the ones he knew about and the surprise “bastard” just out of Picton. Fortunately, he can’t remember who scripted the new Tui billboard – “There’s not many hills after Picton”. And he’d just biked off from little Woodbank School – just out of Kaikoura with 4 kiddies, one of whom has CF – when he found seal lying by the roadside. He thought it might have been hit by a car and was taking a closer look when it reared up and he avoided doing a wheelstand as he tore off. The Hundalees would be his next challenge!

The Cycle4CF event will be a highlight of their lives for Mike, Deb and Briar, the whole experience of it. For the Cystic Fibrosis Association, we’re honoured to have had just a wee keyhole glimpse of the experience and to have benefited from it. But for Mike personally  ... in his own words:

“To all the people who have supported me a Huge thankyou. A little thought I had a few days ago as I was coming down the Kaikoura coast, thought to myself that at times I just needed to slow down and enjoy the scenery and all that was around me ... maybe we should live life like that, I think sometimes we’re so busy on the cycle of life that we’re missing the great things around us ... was just a thought. Once again thank you, Mike”.

Post Script: There’s rumoured to be a CFANZ Board bike relay to Conference in 2011

*Total $11,300 at the time of writing

65 Roses House sells at auction for $131,500!

On March 1st, Napier Mayor Barbara Arnott drove the first nail at the 65 Roses House Build Project at Mitre10 Mega - Napier!

This three-bedroom house was built by Titan Homes with kind sponsorship from Mitre 10 Mega - supported by the Radio Network and many other businesses and people who donated time and product to ensure that when the house is auctioned by Tremain Real Estate on Sunday April 11, as much of the sale price as possible profited the local Hawkes Bay CF Branch AND the National Share in Life Research Fund.

Our grateful thanks to our amazing supporters of this project.

Yes Ironman 2010 is done and dusted with all the Breath4CF athletes who made it to the start line finishing and in many cases, bettering their previous personal bests! The day was a cracker with sunshine but enough wind a bit of light rain in the afternoon to keep things cool.

The Mighty River Power Creation Station was a real hit with all the supporters who came and made 500 signs over the previous few days, which were duly pegged out on the run course along Lake Terrace and out to Taupo Airport.

Money is still coming in from the event but we are likely to hit around $75,000 raised this year which will help a huge number of people with CF to acheive their own fitness goals.

Our sincere thanks to the many athletes and sponsors who made this year's campaign a real success and to the many CF families and individuals who came to volunteer their time on the day and in the time leading up to raceday.

Our very sincere thanks to the following key sponsors

MIGHTY RIVER POWER

MAINFREIGHT

BLUE SEVENTY

AVANTI

M21 MEATS

COCA COLA

Allied Health Education Grants

The Cystic Fibrosis Association of New Zealand (CFANZ) has increased its fund for assisting Cystic Fibrosis Allied Health Professionals to attend appropriate learning opportunities.

There will be two rounds of applications each year. Each round will have maximum pool of $2500, to contribute to learning opportunities for these professionals.  Grants will not aim to cover the whole cost of attending any learning opportunity. In the main, grants will not exceed $500.

Grants will be prioritised toward professionals whose services are provided to the wider CF Community of New Zealand and those whose work has a national focus or those in areas of NZ that have high or special CF needs.

Professionals whose work is in a specific geographic area are encouraged to apply to the local CF Branch for support first, before applying to the National round. NOTE: funding from one source does not automatically preclude you from applying to the other.

Round One: 1 April to 30 June, each year

Round Two: 1 October to 31 December, each year

Application forms are available from here Allied_Health_Education_Grant_App_Form_May2010.pdf or by contacting the CFANZ office. A form is attached to this email for your files.

Forms are to be completed in full, and be forwarded to the CFANZ Administrator before closing date, accompanied by the correct documents.

A decision will be made by the CEO of CFANZ, and all applicants will be notified within two weeks of the current round closing.
